Care to take a ride with me tomorrow to Galveston? Nine? The one in the morning.
“Well, now, I suppose one could make an argument for this being construction related,” Granny said innocently.
Pippa looked up. “How so?”
“I don’t know. I’m sure you’ll think of something.”
Chapter Eleven
True to his word, Logan arrived on her doorstep at exactly nine o’clock. He’d been ready since seven, but he’d never tell Pippa.
She wore pink again, a sweater in a pale version of the color she’d worn to Pop’s, and a pair of white shorts that stopped just above the knee. Tiny pearls at her neck and ears matched the pearls on her sandals.
“What?” she asked when she caught him staring.
“You look beautiful.” And she did. Truly without-a-doubt beautiful.
“But?” She glanced down at her outfit, then back at him. “Too fancy?”
“For Gaido’s Restaurant? No. For Sal’s Stone and Quarry, yes.” Logan shrugged. “I probably should have mentioned that the marble my tile guy brought wasn’t up to par. We’re going to have to see if we can find something that works.”
Pippa grinned, though inside her heart sank just a little. So it was construction related after all. At least she could truthfully report that fact back to Granny. “Okay. Give me just a second.”
He watched her disappear into what he assumed was the bathroom, then wandered over to settle on a bar stool in the kitchen. From his vantage point, Logan could see across the all-white studio-style space and out onto the deck and the Gulf of Mexico beyond. Nothing much indicated the personality of the woman who lived here, but then he assumed Pippa’s things were in storage.
Or maybe she intended to buy all new once the loft was complete.
“I’ve got bottles of water in the fridge,” she called from the other side of the thin wooden wall. “Help yourself, and would you mind grabbing one for me?”
He rose to do as she asked, and when he turned back around Pippa was standing there. In less than five minutes she had gone from glamor girl to fresh-faced beauty. Instead of the pink and pearls, she’d thrown on a pair of denim shorts and a T-shirt in vibrant turquoise with a college logo emblazoned on the front. A pair of running shoes replaced delicate sandals.
“Better?” she asked as she took the water bottle from him.
“Equally lovely,” Logan said as he followed Pippa outside and waited while she latched the door.
The trip to Galveston took less than an hour, and while the conversation never lagged, Logan was careful to avoid the problematic topic of teenagers. Their first stop was the quarry where Pippa wasted no time in choosing exactly the right tile for the space.
The one he would have chosen had he gone without her.
Again, coincidence? Pippa would say no.
“That was easy,” she said when they climbed back into the Jeep, the order placed and delivery scheduled. “What next?”
“There’s a place over near Mechanic Street in the Strand that I’d like you to see,” he said as he backed out of the parking space in front of Sal’s.
